Normal Maps

Shown at Paranoia Store Lucerne with Kali LAB, 2023
Physical objects, such as textiles, do not exist in the digital realm. Since there is no matter, structure is purely simulated. The translation of a textile into a texture transforms the multi-sensorial experience of the fabric into a purely visual surface with simulated three-dimensionality. In the digital realm, a texture can be rendered more realistic by the use of several layers - one of them is the normal map. The normal map tells the computer where to simulate light and shadow, which improves the photorealism and behavior of a texture. The Series brings the inherently digital phenomenon into the physical world, instructing the spectator to read the flat surface as three dimensional.
